Mayawati Frees Akash Anand From BSP After National Convenor Responsibilities Exit

Mayawati has completely freed Akash Anand from the BSP after removing him from key responsibilities. The move follows Ashok Siddharth’s political retirement and renewed tensions within the party.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Thursday said her nephew Akash Anand, who had earlier been relieved of the responsibilities of the party’s national convenor, has now been completely freed from the BSP.

In a post issued through the BSP’s official X handle, the party said, “Just as on September 3, 2026, Akash Anand was relieved of all important responsibilities of the highly important post of national convenor of the party, similarly, from today, he should also be completely free from the party.”

The post further stated, “If Akash Anand now wants to remain independent in the party, he is free, meaning that in such a situation, he has now been completely freed from the party.”

Mayawati also reacted to the decision of Akash Anand’s father-in-law and BSP leader Ashok Siddharth to retire from politics. She described it as a “right step” taken late. However, Mayawati alleged that if Ashok Siddharth had taken the decision earlier, the BSP, the Bahujan Samaj, the Bahujan movement and Akash Anand would not have had to face adverse circumstances.

Mayawati had earlier demanded that Ashok Siddharth, a former Rajya Sabha member, completely retire from politics to secure the political future of her nephew Akash Anand.

Following this, Ashok Siddharth announced his retirement from politics on Thursday. Addressing Mayawati, he wrote on X, “Every order of Behen Ji is final for me.”

Mayawati also described as a conspiracy the allegations that Akash Anand was being misled and that there was an attempt to take control of the party. She said that she had not even met Akash Anand over the past several months.

Mayawati had previously expelled her nephew Akash Anand from the party as well. At that time, she said in a social media post that Akash Anand had been expelled, just like his father-in-law, in the interest of the party and the movement.

However, he was later brought back into the party and given responsibilities again.

Akash Anand was first appointed national convenor by the BSP in 2019. In 2023, Mayawati also declared him her political successor.

Akash Anand is the son of Anand Kumar, Mayawati’s youngest brother. He became associated with BSP activities after returning from London after completing his studies in 2017. In May 2017, he accompanied Mayawati to Saharanpur during a conflict between Thakurs and Dalits.

After the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Akash Anand was made the BSP’s national coordinator, but he failed to bring the party into the race for victory. In the recently held Delhi Assembly elections, Akash Anand was the party’s in-charge, but the party not only failed to win a seat, its vote share also declined.

Mayawati removed Akash Anand from the post of national coordinator last year, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The stated reason was that he needed to become more mature. However, Akash was removed at a time when he was making direct and sharp attacks against the ruling BJP.

After the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Akash Anand returned to the party. In January, he was in effect promoted, with his state-level responsibilities removed and national responsibilities related to organisational work and campaigning assigned to him. However, tensions between the party chief and Akash Anand increased from 2025, with the name of his father-in-law repeatedly emerging at the centre of the dispute.

A LinkedIn profile in Akash Anand’s name was also found by the BBC in July 2023, carrying his photograph. However, the page is no longer available, and clicking the link now displays a message that the page cannot be found.

The profile listed his position as Founder and Managing Director of DJT Corporation and Investments.

According to information available on the LinkedIn profile, Akash Anand was the founder of DJT Corporation and Investments and had established the company seven years earlier in April 2016.

The profile also stated that Akash studied for a BBA at the University of Plymouth in the UK between 2013 and 2016.

According to the profile, he studied at Pathways World School in Gurgaon.

The LinkedIn profile stated, “Akash was born into a first-generation business family, which is a simple family. Akash always dreamed of doing something big. Because of his personal experiences, he became an entrepreneur and set out to establish his business from scratch. Currently, Akash manages four companies of his group and handles their business operations related to retail trade, finance and insurance.”

Mayawati’s latest decision marks another major turn in Akash Anand’s political journey, following repeated changes in his organisational responsibilities, his earlier expulsion and subsequent return to the BSP.
